ARCC hold second RCC Meeting for the Year 2022

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) on 20 December, 2022, held its second RCC meeting for the year 2022.

The RCC meeting is a statutory meeting where members of the RCC, including MMDCEs, PMs, two  chiefs, Heads of Departments, with the Regional Minister as Chairman and the Regional Coordinating Director as secretary come together to discuss issues bordering on development in the Region.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah reported to the house that under roads infrastructure, the Highways Authority, since the last meeting in June, has awarded one contract in the Amansie South District, that is from Mim junction to Manso Adubia to Kumpese road. Three (3) other projects, namely the Asankare-Krofa-Juansa road and Krofa-Brantuokrom-Magyeda road, upgrading of Nsuta-Beposo lot 3 and upgrading of Bekwai town roads, have also been completed.

64km of roads bitumen surfacing at the Nyinahin bauxite enclave.

 Under Feeder Roads, the Sinohydro Company upgraded about 64km of roads to bitumen surfacing at the Nyinahin bauxite enclave. The critical bypass from Santase to Apre through Bebu to Ampabame No2 is also under construction and hopefully, it will be completed by the close of 2023 under the Feeder Roads.

Rehabilitation and Auxiliary Infrastructure project

Under Urban Roads, the Rehabilitation and Auxiliary Infrastructure of Kumasi Inner Roads and Adjacent Street facility project awarded to Messrs Contracta Construction ltd. and commenced in February 2020 was duly completed within the scheduled period, February 2022. The project was commissioned in August, 2022 by His Excellency, the Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Under this project a total of 100.7 km of roads were rehabilitated in Bantama, Manhyia, Nhyiaeso, Subin, Asokwa, Kwadaso, Oforikrom Suame and Old Tafo.

Kumasi Inner City Roads

The sod cutting ceremony for the Rehabilitation of Kumasi Inner City Roads under the Synohydro Master Facility was performed in March this year by His Excellency, the Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Under this project, another 100km of roads would be rehabilitated to compliment the Contracta works. Eight (8) MMDAs will be beneficiaries of this project and they are as follows. Works are on-going in six (6) local assemblies.

Lake road project

The Kumasi Roads and Drainage Extension Project is project popularly referred to as the Lake Road project when completed will provide additional capacity through the widening of the existing Lake Road (which was a single carriageway) into a dual carriageway from Coca-Cola Bottling Company area to the Dompoase Junction. The project has other additional components to the benefit of the enclave.

The project is currently at about 98% completion. The contractors, Messrs China Henan International Cooperation Group Co. Ltd is scheduled to complete the road for the full benefit of the people in Kumasi by end of first quarter of 2023.

Building at Unauthorized Places

Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah bemoaned the construction of unauthorized buildings at public spaces, right of ways and wetlands which has become a major problem especially within the Greater Kumasi area and is now extended to the adjoining Districts.

He indicated that there is an urgent need to enforce the Local Government Act 462, section 51 and 52 that directs that unauthorized structures on public properties (Lands) should be stopped and demolished and the developer, surcharged.

He cautioned MMDCEs to desist from granting permits to developers who undertake projects at public spaces, and should ensure that Spatial Planning and Development Control Units are up and doing.
