The Guangxi Zhang Autonomous Region of China and the Ashanti Region of Ghana are in talks to form Inter-Region relations for the mutual benefit of both Regions. This came to light when the Vice Governor of Guangxi Zhang Autonomous Region of China, H.E. Liao Pingu and a delegation from the region paid a courtesy call on the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah in his office at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council on 14th August 2024,
According to H.E. Liao Pingu, Guangxi Zhang Autonomous Region has a long-standing relationship with Ghana, especially, in areas of trade. Trade volumes between the two is estimated at 180 million dollars for the first half of the year 2024.

Guangxi, according to the Vice Governor, is located in Southern China with a well-developed agro-industry. ‘It is currently the largest producer of sugar in China with large rice farms as well’, he added.
The area can also boast of some mineral deposits and industries engaged in the production of machinery for large-scale mining.
The Vice Governor noted that besides trade, agriculture, mining and industry, another important area of cooperation is culture and tourism.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah underscored the similarities between Guangxi Region and Ashanti Region in terms of Agriculture and minerals and noted that a strong cooperation between the two would be mutually beneficial.
According to the Minister, even though Ghana has great potential in rice production, less is produced with a greater percentage of rice imported. Thus, cooperation in areas that will increase rice production so that Ghana becomes the leading producer to feed the Sub-Region is vital. Other vital areas of cooperation are eco-tourism, educational exchange programmes and cultural relations, the Regional Minister added.
Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah indicated that the railway industry is also a promising area that can yield good returns if investment is directed in that sector as such would also be an area of focus for the two Regions.
The Ashanti Regional Minister is expected to visit Guangxi Zhang Autonomous Region in October during which the two would be expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on areas of cooperation.
