Ashanti Regional Security Council led by the Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah on 10th April 2024 as part of preventive security initiative undertook an inspection tour of some selected quarry sites within the Afigya Kwabre South District.
Some of these quarry sites are Modern granite and World cool Ltd at Buoho as well as K. K. quarry Ltd and Brosa quarry resources at Mowire all within the Afigya Kwabre South District.
According to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei-Mensah this is a preventive security initiative that REGSEC has taken to make sure quarry site owners adhere to safety standard.
The Regional Minister intimated that, this is an industry that makes use of explosives as such non adherence to safety measures can lead to detrimental consequences.
He noted that most of the places visited did not have a properly documented safety guidelines which is disturbing. “The REGSEC will take it upon itself to provide a draft guideline for the sites within the catchment area to follow and implement”, he added. The team also educated quarry owner on fire safety and emergency measures.
Addressing concerns of the quarry owners with respect to encroachment of quarry sites, the Minister made an appeal to traditional authority within the area to restrain themselves from selling lands that have already been ceded for quarry purposes. He advised the concession owners to work together with the local assembly to prevent private developers from encroaching on their concession.
